Frontiers of Science

The HSE ISSEK Foresight Centre conducts a longitudinal study to identify the most significant topics on the global science and technology agenda using the iFORA big data analytics system.

Research Сontext

Economic growth and social progress are directly determined by the level of science and technology development. Countries that secure a leading position in research and development gain competitive advantages in the global market—including through effective management of science and technology progress and flexible responses to shifts in the global agenda and the emergence of new challenges.

Using artificial intelligence technologies, HSE ISSEK’s specialists regularly map global science and identify its frontiers—the most significant areas of development. Based on the OECD classification of Fields of Research and Development, a list comprising 15 scientific fields, 131 research areas, and approximately 15,000 research topics was compiled. For each area, frontiers of science were identified, encompassing a wide range of topics related to the study of diverse phenomena, processes, and problems, as well as the development of methodologies, technologies, products, etc. Calculations are based on data from over 35.5 million documents selected by iFORA system algorithms from the corpus of international publications available on the Microsoft Academic Graph platform.
